The
School of Foreign Languages of the
University of Athens introduced during the academic year 2005 – 2006
the teaching of Hindi, the main Indian language, for the first time in
Greece. The teaching of Hindi is the continuance of the whole efforts
by the University of Athens to expand the teachings of Asian
languages. By this time Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Turkish
languages were being taught with success.
The
Hindi lessons are lectured by Dr. Demetrios
Vassiliades in two beginners segments each lasting 3 hours every
Monday and Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9
p.m. and are targeted at
students of the university as well as the general public. The
curriculum is based on the learning programme for foreign students
from the segment of the Banaras
Hindu University. The lessons start with the
learning of the Alphabet (Varnamala) and
proceed gradually with the learning of vocabulary, daily phrases and
Grammar, concluding with the studying of texts and poems of
contemporary Indian literature.
The
Hindi Class is aspiring to become the core for the writing of books in
order to aid the learning of the Hindi language for Greek people, as
well as a study centre for Indian culture in the short run. The Hindi
language is the most common formal language of India and is spoken in
many northern states as well as in Pakistan, where it is known as Urdu
and is written with Arabian writing.
A lot
of interest was expressed from various groups in the introduction to
the learning of Sanskrit language, which we intend to begin in October
during the academic year 2006 – 2007, parallel to the new classes of
beginners and intermediate levels for Hindi.
