MY EXPERIENCE IN BAKESHWAR

During the month of February, 2004, I worked as a volunteer at the girls' orphanage in Bakeshwar, 12 km. south of Kolkata. The orphanage is  one of the many activities of the Philanthropic Society of the Orthodox Church which was founded in 1993 by Father Ignatius Sennis and Sister Nectaria Paradisi.   Some years later, in 1999, the orphanage was inaugurated and it now houses 160 little girls, between the ages of 6 - 15.  As the supervisor, Sister Nectaria, has not been given a Visa to return to India for almost a year, volunteers have been taking turns to ensure the normal operation of the orphanage.  In the same grounds, next to the main building, a large vocational school is under construction, where the girls, after graduation from the secondary school, can prepare themselves for their future, working in the field of their choice.   Nearby, in the village of Bakeshwar, a large school for the deaf-and-dumb is under construction.   Donations from Greeks Abroad and of mainland Greece enable the Society to carry on a wide range of philanthropic work,  not only in Kalighat, Kolkata, where the Greek Orthodox Church has its seat, but also in 38 villages in the state of Bengal.

CONGRATULATIONS

I am in Goa right now. Well, you may also know that Goans are crazy about football particularly when it is played in Portugal (some hangover from being colonized). So to cut a long story short, I was in a crowded goan bar watching the match last night and was the sole person rooting for Greece! Congratulations to you! It seems the Greek sun is finally rising on the sports horizon.

Brava, brava as the crowd was saying!

ΣΧΟΛΙΑ ΓΙΑ ΙΝΔΙΚΑ

Δέν γνωρίζω κατά πόσο τα ελληνικά πανεπιστήμια ενδιαφέρονται για την Ινδολογία. Αυτό που είναι σημαντικό σήμερα είναι ν΄ αναγνωρίσει κανείς ότι η Ελλάδα με τους οικονομικούς και άλλους μετανάστες έχει μετατραπεί σε μια πολυπολιτισμική χώρα. 

Μέσα στον Ελληνικό χώρο ζουν διάφορες άλλες εθνικές μειονότητες που επίσης επιθυμούν την ελευθερία έκφρασης σε κάθε τομέα της κοινωνικής ζωής. Είναι χρήσιμο και θα τολμούσα να πω αναγκαιότητα να υπάρχουν άνθρωποι στα πανεπιστήμια της χώρας μας που να γνωρίζουν τον πολιτισμό αυτών των ανθρώπων. Τό ίδιο χρήσιμο βεβαίως είναι να υπάρχουν στα πανεπιστήμια αυτών των εθνικοτήτων άνθρωποι που θα προωθούν την Ελληνική κουλτούρα.

Σχετικά με το Ινδικό σχολείο, υπάρχουν στην Αθήνα τα διαπολιτισμικά σχολεία στα οποία πηγαίνουν όσα παιδιά μεταναστών δεν θέλουν να ενταχθούν στο σχολείο της γειτονιάς τους. Αυτά τα σχολεία δεν έχουν καλή πορεία. Πάντως η Ελλάδα ακόμα δεν έχει προωθήσει ειδικά σχολεία για μειονότητες για να μη δημιουργούνται γκέτο. Συμφωνώ όμως με την όλη προσπάθεια για την ενισχυτική διδασκαλία των Ινδών μαθητών.

STUDYING ANCIENT INDIAN HISTORY

Congratulations, for Greece winning the European Cup. Hope the Olympics too will conclude successfully.

I am happy to know, the Indo-Hellenic Society has decided to publish its own magazine. I do not know how I could contribute to it, because of my lack of knowledge on academic subjects. My activities have much to do about community development. But at the moment I am informing myself on "Ancient Indian History", hoping to learn more about ancient Indian social administration applications. 

In the book I am reading at the moment, "Ancient Indian History" by H. Mukerjee, there are many references on the cultural impact of the Greeks and Alexander in ancient India. I have yet to finish working with this book and equip myself with enough knowledge that could be useful for contribution to your magazine. This really could be an interesting Subject.

INDIAN FESTIVAL 2005,  MILAN, ITALY

Dear all,

I am glad to inform that next Indian Festival: East meets west 2005, in Milan, Italy, full dedicated to India, will be in April from 7^th to 17^th.

In it a big event in the event: EuroYoga 2005! Will take part  Federations,  Associations, Schools, etc. from all over the world, with Yoga compulsions.... of rhythmic, acrobatic and artistic sessions.

We will give the opportunity to attend this Festival, to the dancers classical, folk, and modern style (Bollywood dance), musicians, singers, actors, directors, lecturers, performers and... tailors, stylists in fashion parades, collectors for exhibitions and.... handicraftsmen with hand-made articles (in 4.000 m. they could sell their items), restaurants etc.  everything about India.

Ο ΕΛΛΗΝΑΣ, Ο ΙΝΔΟΣ ΚΑΙ Ο ΑΜΕΡΙΚΑΝΟΣ 

Βρέθηκαν μια μέρα στη Κόλαση ένας  Έλληνας, ένας Αμερικανός και ένας Ινδός.
Τους συναντάει ο Διάβολος και τους λέει.

- Σε όλους που έρχονται εδώ δίνω μία  ευκαιρία να μεταφερθούν στο Παράδεισο.

Και βγάζει ένα τεράστιο μαστίγιο λέγοντας :

- όποιος θ αντέξει τρία χτυπήματα χωρίς να φωνάξει φεύγει στον Παράδεισο, μπορείτε να χρησιμοποιείτε για ασπίδα ό,τι θέλετε.

Πρώτος βγαίνει ο Αμερικανός.

- Τι θα έχεις για ασπίδα? Ρωτάει ο  Διάβολος.

Ο αμερικανός σηκώνει μια τεράστια  πέτρα και λέει «είμαι έτοιμος».

Σηκώνει ο Σατανάς το μαστίγιο, χτυπάει  μια και φεύγει η πέτρα, χτυπάει δεύτερη... φωνάζει σαν τρελός ο αμερικάνος.

- Επόμενος, λέει ο Σατανάς  .

Βγαίνει ο Ινδός.

- Τι θα έχεις για ασπίδα?

- Τίποτα! - λέει ο Ινδός- 80 χρόνια  γιόγκα έκανα και δεν νιώθω πόνο σωματικό

ποτέ!

Πρώτο χτύπημα. Ο ινδός «σσσσσσσς»

Δεύτερο χτύπημα. Ο ινδός «σσσσσσς»

Τρίτο χτύπημα. Ο ινδός «σσσσσς»

- Α να πάρει!!! κάνει ο Διάβολος  «πρώτη φορά αντέχει κάποιος τρία

χτυπήματα. Λοιπόν λέει είσαι ελεύθερος να  πας στον παράδεισο.»

- ΟΧΙ,  λέει ο Ινδός, θέλω να μείνω και να δω. Σε όλα τα ανέκδοτα ο Έλληνας

την  βγάζει καθαρή, θέλω να δω τώρα πώς θα ξεμπερδέψει!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Εντάξει, μείνε.



- Λοιπόν τι  θα χρησιμοποιήσεις για ασπίδα? ρωτάει τον Έλληνα...



- ΤΟΝ  ΙΝΔΟ!!!
